This full-day tour takes you from Kandy into the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country by one of the great railway lines on the island, arriving at Nanu Oya before continuing into Nuwara Eliya and returning by road through the plantation hills. It is a single, coherent journey with a genuine mix of travel modes: a train ride through the highlands, time on foot in a colonial-era hill town, and a road return that passes a waterfall and a working tea factory.
Your chauffeur collects you from your Kandy hotel at 7:30 in the morning and transfers you to either Kandy or Peradeniya railway station, where the train departs at approximately 8:30. The route follows Sri Lanka Railways' Main Line — the Colombo to Badulla corridor — as it climbs through forests and across the folds of the Central Highlands. For roughly three hours the carriage windows frame rows of tea bushes on steep hillsides, mountain villages wreathed in cloud, wooded ravines and the occasional waterfall glimpsed between the trees. Passengers who want to feel the wind and take in the scenery unobstructed often stand at the open carriage doors, gripping the handrail as the train crosses trestle bridges above dense green valleys. Your seat is in second class, with a complimentary upgrade to first class offered subject to availability.
The train arrives at Nanu Oya at approximately 12:30. The station, which opened in 1885 and was originally built as the terminus of this line to serve the plantation trade, sits at around 1,200 metres above sea level in the Nuwara Eliya District. Nuwara Eliya town itself is a further half-hour's drive up a winding road, and your guide meets you at the station to make that transfer. The town has a character unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka: the streets are lined with English-style cottages, villas and substantial mansions accumulated during the colonial era, and the air carries a cool that reminds visitors why the place became a retreat for tea planters. Lunch at approximately 13:30 is at a restaurant of your choice and at your own expense. Afterwards, your guide takes you to Lake Gregory and the Nuwara Eliya Post Office, both worth a proper look rather than a passing glance.
The return drive to Kandy begins at around 15:00 and follows the A5 road back down through the hills, with two stops. The first is at Ramboda Falls, a long plume of water that drops from the forested escarpment above the road. The second is the Blue Field Tea Factory, a working estate where Ceylon Tea has been produced since the factory was founded in 1824. Here you can walk through the production process and understand how the fresh leaf harvested on hillsides like the ones you passed by train becomes the finished tea Sri Lanka exports around the world. You depart the factory at around 17:00 and arrive back at your Kandy hotel at approximately 19:30.
The tour is fully private throughout the road sections, with an air-conditioned vehicle and an English-speaking chauffeur guide from start to finish. Included in the arrangement are hotel pickup and drop-off, the train journey, entrance fees, all taxes and service charges, and one litre of bottled mineral water per person. Food, drinks beyond that, gratuities and personal expenses are not included.
