Train № 1015, named the Udarata Menike — which translates roughly as 'Hill Country Maiden' — has been running between Colombo Fort and Badulla since 23 April 1956, making it one of Sri Lanka's longest-serving named express services. The segment from Nanu Oya to Ella represents its most celebrated stretch: a climb through high moorland, a crossing of the island's roof near Pattipola at close to 1,900 metres above sea level, and then a long, sinuous descent through tea estates into the small town of Ella. Securing a seat on this service independently is genuinely difficult — Sri Lanka Railways releases reserved tickets only thirty days before the travel date, and demand consistently outpaces supply, particularly during the peak travel months of December to March and July to August.
The route earns its reputation not through any single moment but through the sustained quality of the landscape it passes through. From Nanu Oya — the station that serves Nuwara Eliya, situated a few kilometres from the town itself — the line crosses open highland terrain that skirts the boundary of Horton Plains National Park before beginning its descent. Tea estates replace moorland, waterfalls appear in the valleys below, and the track threads through tunnels cut directly into the hillside. Near Ella, two engineering landmarks come into view: the Nine Arch Bridge, a stone viaduct of considerable scale built during the colonial era, and the Demodara Loop, a spiral of track that gains elevation within a very short horizontal distance and has the curious effect of passing directly above a section of itself.
The Udarata Menike carries three classes of travel. First Class is an air-conditioned observation saloon with reserved, numbered seats and panoramic windows; because the carriage is sealed, windows cannot be opened. Second Class is a non-air-conditioned saloon with reserved seating, ceiling fans, and windows that can be opened fully — the carriage shown in the product photographs, with its blue upholstered face-to-face seats and overhead luggage racks, is representative of this type. Third Class is unreserved and sold only at the station on the day of travel. The rolling stock in operation on a given day can vary; Sri Lanka Railways operates several locomotive and carriage types across this service.
Because Lakpura holds a limited allocation of reserved tickets as an SLTDA-accredited operator, booking through this listing gives access to seats that would otherwise require queuing in the railway's own thirty-day window. A few important conditions apply. Payment alone does not confirm a ticket — the reservation is processed against actual availability, and if a seat cannot be secured, the full payment is returned. Accurate passport details for every passenger are required at the time of booking, as tickets are issued under those details and incorrect information can result in denial of boarding by Sri Lanka Railways. Where the requested class is unavailable, a lower class may be substituted and the fare difference refunded automatically.
E-tickets are issued approximately six hours before departure, as the team continues working to secure the best available seats until the last practical moment. The ticket covers the train journey itself and all applicable taxes and service charges. Hotel transfers to Nanu Oya station or from Ella station, food and drink, and personal expenses are not included — the onboard snack situation is informal, with vendors boarding at platform stops, but no dedicated catering car or sleeping arrangement is part of this service. Sri Lanka Railways schedules do change, and the mountain line is susceptible to delays after heavy rain; current departure times should always be confirmed with Sri Lanka Railways directly before travel.
