Mlesna's Pol-Pala is a pure herbal tisane made from a single ingredient: the finely cut, dried herb of Aerva lanata, the plant known in Sri Lanka as polpala. Produced and packed entirely in Sri Lanka, it carries no tea from the Camellia sinensis plant and nothing else alongside it — the green foil pouch contains the herb and the herb alone.
Polpala grows wild across the island and its leaves have long been gathered for use in Sri Lankan kitchens as well as in the country's traditional herbal practice. Mlesna takes this familiar Sri Lankan plant and processes it into a ready-to-brew loose tisane, finely cut so that the herb infuses readily in a teapot. The result is a pale, lightly aromatic brew that reflects the kind of everyday herbal drink that Sri Lankans have prepared at home for generations.
Mlesna itself has been manufacturing and exporting Ceylon teas from Colombo since 1983, and its range now extends to well over three thousand products shipped to more than fifty countries. The company has received a substantial body of recognition for both its teas and its packaging, including multiple World Star and Asia Star awards. This Pol-Pala tisane is part of Mlesna's herbal line and is exported under the Euro-Scan Exports banner from the company's Colombo base.
Preparing the tisane is straightforward. One level teaspoonful of the herb goes into a teapot per cup, followed by freshly boiled water. After five minutes of brewing, the infusion is ready to pour. Sugar can be stirred in according to taste. The packet is a resealable green foil flexible pouch with a yellow label, designed to keep the herb in good condition when stored in a cool, dry place.
