A collection of Sinhala song texts by Dharmasiri Gamage, issued in Colombo by Godage. The National Library of Sri Lanka's union catalogue records it under the subject heading "Songs, Sinhalese" — that is, the book gathers lyrics rather than music notation or commentary.
The book is written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text and no parallel translation, so it will be readable only by those who read Sinhala script. Buyers outside Sri Lanka ordering for a reader who does not have the language should know this before deciding.
Song lyrics occupy a particular place in Sinhala letters. Writers of standing have worked in the form, and printed collections allow the words to be read as text on the page, separate from any performance or recording. A volume of this kind sits closer to a book of verse than to a songbook in the Western sense.
Godage International Publishers is an established Colombo house publishing in Sinhala and in English, with a list that runs across literature, history, religion and social subjects. Sinhala-language titles from Colombo publishers are often difficult to find outside Sri Lanka, and collections of song texts in particular rarely reach shelves abroad.
This will suit readers of Sinhala looking for contemporary song writing in printed form, those building a personal library of Sinhala literature while living overseas, and university or community collections holding Sri Lankan material. It is an uncomplicated book: a writer's songs, set down to be read.
