Earl's Regency is a five-star Aitken Spence hotel on a forested hillside at Tennekumbura, just east of Kandy, with balconies over the Mahaweli river. It has 116 rooms and suites with wooden floors and local design touches, a big swimming pool, the Ayu spa and a choice of restaurants and bars, and it sits on the road out towards Victoria and the Knuckles.
Every room has air conditioning, satellite television, a writing desk, tea and coffee making facilities, a hairdryer, a safe and a private balcony, and every bathroom has a bathtub. All categories have a king-size bed, and extra beds and cots can be added; interconnecting rooms are available for families. The names below are the ones you will see when you book.
Each category can take up to three adults with an extra bed. If you are travelling as a family, ask for interconnecting rooms rather than squeezing into one.
The main restaurant serves international and Sri Lankan food as buffets with live cooking stations. King's Court is the à la carte restaurant, with fusion cooking drawing on European, Asian, Indian and Sri Lankan kitchens. The Mountbatten Bar and Lounge serves cocktails and classic snacks, the Tapp Bar has cocktails and karaoke, and Dip 'n' Dive is the poolside bar.
The hotel has a large swimming pool, and the Ayu spa offers massages. There is a gym and badminton, a shopping arcade, currency exchange and facilities for children and families. Golfers can play at the Victoria Golf and Country Resort, further along the same road, with transport arranged by the hotel.
The hotel stands above the Mahaweli, Sri Lanka's longest river, in the suburb of Kundasale. The Temple of the Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake are about 3.5 kilometres away in a straight line, and the evening Kandyan dance show is a short drive. The cave temple of Degaldoruwa is close by across the river, and Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden lies on the far side of the city. Heading east, the road continues to the Victoria Reservoir and the walking country of the Knuckles Range.
The hotel is about 86 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport in a straight line; by road the route climbs into the hills through Kandy itself. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Earl's Regency, which takes you all the way to the door. If you come by train, Kandy station is about 4 kilometres away in a straight line; arrange a pick-up in advance.
It suits travellers who want a full-service five-star hotel with a pool and river views rather than a guesthouse in town, families who need interconnecting rooms, and couples looking for a room with a private Jacuzzi. It is just outside the city traffic but close enough for evening visits to the Temple of the Tooth. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Kandy, or the other Aitken Spence hotels around the island.
