A book by Paul Harris, a British journalist whose reporting has appeared in the Daily Telegraph and Jane's Intelligence Review, and who spent time in Sri Lanka during a period of conflict and political tension.
Harris based himself at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo, the colonial-era hotel on the seafront, and his stay in the country ended early: he met harassment and official pressure, and left before he intended to. That experience — of working as a foreign correspondent in a country where the reporting was unwelcome — sits behind the book.
It is written in English and will suit readers interested in press freedom, foreign correspondence and the recent political history of Sri Lanka, as well as anyone drawn to writing about Colombo and the Galle Face Hotel itself. Visitors who have stayed there, or who know the stretch of green beside it, will find a familiar setting seen from an unusual angle.
