About this experience

A day in Bundala National Park begins long before the jeep's engine starts, on the drive east out of Mirissa towards Sri Lanka's dry southern coast. This tour collects you from your hotel at eleven in the morning and sets off for Bundala, where wetlands, scrubland and five saltwater lagoons meet the sea. By the time you arrive, around two in the afternoon, the heat of the day has settled over the park and the light is good for spotting what moves along its waterlines.

Bundala holds a rare set of credentials for a park its size: it was Sri Lanka's first Ramsar wetland, is recognised by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area, and carries UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. The reason becomes clear once you are inside. Its lagoons and marshes draw close to 200 species of bird, and the greater flamingo is the one people come hoping to see, arriving in large flocks to wait out the northern winter. Alongside the flamingos you may spot storks, spoonbills, cormorants, ducks and the Eurasian coot moving through the shallows and reedbeds.

The park's wildlife is not limited to birds. Small herds of elephants roam the scrub and marshland, often feeding at the water's edge, and the lagoons are home to both of Sri Lanka's crocodile species, the freshwater mugger and the estuarine crocodile, baskers that are hard to miss once you know to look along the banks. Langurs, deer, wild boar and jackals also pass through the undergrowth, and the coast nearby is a nesting ground for marine turtles. A peacock crossing open grass, a lone stork working the edge of an algae-green pond, a bee-eater perched over the lagoon: this is the texture of a Bundala safari, built from small sightings as much as grand ones.

Your three-hour jeep safari is led by an English-speaking driver who doubles as your tracker, taking you through terrain that is only accessible by vehicle. Transport between Mirissa and the park runs in an air-conditioned car with its own English-speaking chauffeur, so the travelling itself is kept comfortable even as the safari portion gets you properly into the park's open ground and waterways. The day runs to a fixed rhythm: out from Mirissa at eleven, into the park by early afternoon, three hours on safari, and back in Mirissa by half past eight in the evening.

This is a private tour for one group, suited to travellers aged seven and above, and runs to a full day of seven hours door to door. Hotel pickup and drop-off, the air-conditioned transport, the English-speaking driver and the jeep safari itself are all part of the arrangement, along with taxes and service charges. Food, drinks, gratuities, personal expenses and park entrance tickets are not included, so it is worth planning for those separately before you set off.
