About this experience

The sixth largest animal sanctuary in Sri Lanka, Udawalawe National Park lies some 112 miles (180 km) from Colombo in the south-central sector of the island. Set just south of the Central Highlands, its escarpment forms an enrapturing backdrop to the wildlife below. Created as a sanctuary in the 1970s, the park is famed above all for its Sri Lankan elephants and its water birds.

The day begins with pickup from your Mirissa hotel and a scenic drive to the park, where a safari jeep and driver-tracker meet you for a three-hour ride. Travelling through Udawalawe's marshes, forests and grasslands, you'll look out for elephants and water birds along with other mammals, reptiles, amphibians and butterflies, before the return journey to the coast.
