A Sinhala-language picture story for young children, published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo. The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation, so it suits households where a child is reading or being read to in the language.
The title translates as "Grandmother's Birthday". It belongs to a series of children's books gathered under the name Apé Punchi Weerayingé Katha Maalaawa — stories of our little heroes — put together to teach good conduct to small children through stories rather than instruction. The series was made to introduce important values in life to children simply and enjoyably.
It is aimed at the youngest readers: parents and grandparents reading aloud, and children beginning to read Sinhala on their own. For Sri Lankan families living abroad, books of this kind are one of the ordinary ways a child keeps hold of the language, since the story carries the reading rather than a lesson doing it.
