Trianthema portulacastrum

Trianthema portulacastrum, commonly called desert horsepurslane, black pigweed, or giant pigweed, is a low-growing flowering plant belonging to the ice plant family (Aizoaceae). Widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions, it is native to parts of Africa and the Americas, and has become naturalised across Asia, Australia, and various Pacific islands. Its ability to colonise disturbed ground and cultivated land makes it one of the more persistent weeds encountered in agricultural and roadside settings throughout Sri Lanka and the broader tropics.

What does Trianthema portulacastrum look like?

The plant is an annual herb that forms a prostrate mat or loose clump, with stems typically reaching up to a metre in length. The stems range from green to deep red depending on growing conditions and sun exposure. Apart from narrow lines of fine hairs running adjacent to the leaf bases, the plant is otherwise hairless, and the entire structure has a distinctly fleshy or succulent character — an adaptation suited to warm, seasonally dry environments.

Leaves are small, with round to oval blades generally no more than four centimetres long, carried on short petioles. Their succulent texture and pale undersides give the foliage a slightly glaucous appearance. Solitary flowers arise from leaf axils and are notably modest: there are no true petals, but the purple, petal-like sepals provide a subtle colour contrast against the green or reddish stems.

What are the fruit and seed characteristics?

The fruit of Trianthema portulacastrum is a curved, cylindrical capsule that emerges directly from the stem tissue. It typically grows to around half a centimetre in length and is distinguished by two erect, pointed wings positioned at the top — the point at which the capsule splits open at maturity. This unusual architecture is directly tied to the plant's seed-dispersal strategy.

When the capsule opens, one seed may be carried away on the detached cap, which is capable of floating on water — an efficient mechanism for dispersal along drainage channels, irrigation furrows, and seasonal watercourses. Remaining seeds may either fall directly from the open capsule or stay attached to the dried plant material through the dry season, germinating in place when conditions become favourable again the following year.

Where does Trianthema portulacastrum grow?

This species is remarkably tolerant of a wide range of conditions. It thrives in open, disturbed soils — roadsides, field margins, fallow agricultural plots, riverbeds, and coastal sandy areas. It is particularly common in lowland tropical zones where temperatures remain high and rainfall is seasonal. In Sri Lanka, it appears across the dry and intermediate zones, often colonising the edges of vegetable gardens, paddy field bunds, and disturbed scrubland.

Its tolerance of saline and sandy substrates, combined with its succulent foliage, reflects an evolutionary heritage suited to semi-arid and seasonally waterlogged environments alike. These traits also make it a competitive weed in crops such as maize, groundnut, sorghum, and various vegetable cultivations.

Why is Trianthema portulacastrum considered a weed?

From an agronomic perspective, Trianthema portulacastrum is classified as a problematic weed in many tropical farming systems. It germinates rapidly after rain, grows quickly to form dense ground-covering mats, and competes effectively with crops for water, light, and nutrients. Its multiple seed-dispersal mechanisms — water flotation, passive shedding, and post-senescence retention — allow it to persist and spread with minimal intervention.

Despite its weedy reputation, the plant is not without value in traditional contexts. In parts of South Asia and Africa, the leaves and young shoots are used in local culinary preparations and folk medicine, where the plant has a long history of use as a leafy green and as a remedy for various ailments. Its high oxalate content means it is generally consumed after cooking rather than raw.

What is the ecological role of this plant?

Like many pioneer species, Trianthema portulacastrum plays a functional role in disturbed ecosystems by quickly covering bare soil, reducing erosion, and providing ground-level habitat for insects and small invertebrates. In natural scrub and semi-arid systems, it contributes to early successional vegetation before perennial species establish. Its rapid lifecycle — from germination to seed set within a single season — allows it to complete reproduction ahead of environmental stresses such as drought.

The species is also studied in the context of phytoremediation research, as members of the Aizoaceae family are known for their capacity to accumulate certain ions from the soil. While Trianthema portulacastrum is not among the most widely cited hyperaccumulators, its tolerance of degraded soils continues to attract interest in ecological restoration and soil science.
