Albizia odoratissima, commonly called Ceylon rosewood in Sri Lanka and black siris or kali siris in India, is a fast-growing deciduous tree belonging to the legume family Fabaceae. Native to a broad arc of tropical and subtropical Asia — encompassing Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and southern China — it is also counted among the most productive nitrogen-fixing trees in the world, making it ecologically significant well beyond its ornamental and commercial appeal.

What does Albizia odoratissima look like?

Mature trees typically reach between 15 and 25 metres in height, with trunk diameters of 120–150 cm. The bark is dark grey and marked with horizontal lenticels, giving it a distinctive textured appearance. Leaves are bipinnately compound — meaning each leaf is divided into smaller leaflets — and slightly downy to the touch, with three to nine pairs of pinnae and ten to thirty pairs of pinnules per leaf.

The flowers are fragrant, opening white before fading to a pale orange, and appear in large clusters at the branch tips. Mature seed pods are reddish-brown, thin, and flat, measuring 13–20 cm long and 2–4 cm wide. Each pod typically contains eight to twelve reddish-brown seeds, each weighing around 0.5 g. Seeds germinate readily and show high viability, though they are often damaged by Bruchidius beetles in the family Chrysomelidae.
