Jetwing Blue is a large beachfront resort at Ethukala, on the northern side of Negombo, on the site Jetwing calls the original home of its hotels. Its white wings with terracotta roofs and timber balconies face the Indian Ocean across lawns, palms and two swimming pools, and the airport is only about 8 kilometres away in a straight line.
Every room looks out to the ocean and has central air-conditioning with individual controls, a 42-inch television, free Wi-Fi, a minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, an electronic safe, bathrobes and slippers. The Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Suite categories are designed for two adults; our rates allow a third adult, or two adults with children, if you tell us when you book. The Kitchen is the main restaurant, an open-kitchen space on the beachfront with ocean views, serving Eastern and Western dishes from buffets and an à la carte menu at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Centre Point Grill and Bar runs on to the beach for casual all-day grills and drinks. The Float is a small bar on the sand for cocktails, mocktails and wine, and The Outrigger is the poolside bar, named after Negombo's traditional oruwa fishing boats, for tropical drinks, light snacks and sunsets. Jetwing's signature dining can also set up special dinners for you.
There are two swimming pools, including a long pool in front of the main wing, and the beach is right beyond the gardens. The spa offers Ayurvedic treatments, massages, body treatments and facials, and there is a gym and in-house shops. The hotel's excursions include a visit to the Lellama fish market, the Meegama treacle trail, where you see how coconut treacle is made, a farm-to-table pick-and-cook experience and a tour of Negombo's churches. The grand ballroom hosts weddings and events for up to 800 guests.
Negombo Beach runs in front of the hotel. Negombo town, often called "Little Rome" for its churches, has St Mary's Church with its painted ceilings, the busy fish market where the catch is laid out to dry on the sand, and the gateway of the old Dutch fort. Boat trips run on Negombo Lagoon and along the Hamilton Canal, and the Muthurajawela wetlands south of the lagoon are good for birds.
You can, though most guests come by road. Negombo railway station, on the coastal line north of Colombo, is in the town to the south, and a three-wheeler or a pre-arranged pick-up will bring you up the coast road to Ethukala.
Bandaranaike International Airport is only about 8 kilometres from the hotel in a straight line, one of the shortest airport runs to any beach hotel in Sri Lanka, which makes Jetwing Blue an easy choice after a long-haul flight or before an early departure. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Blue, with the driver waiting as you come through arrivals.
It suits families who want space, a big pool and a choice of places to eat, couples who want a full-service beach hotel close to the airport, and anyone starting or ending a tour of the island with a few nights by the sea.
