Nyne Hotels The Muse is a small boutique villa of nine rooms in Bentota, on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, set in tropical gardens around a swimming pool just behind the beach. It opened in 2002 as one of the first contemporary boutique hotels in the country, traded for years as Taru Villas – The Muse, and is now run by Nyne Hotels. With so few rooms it is quiet and suits couples and adults looking for a peaceful stay by the sea.
The villa stands at Robolgoda in Bentota, set back from the shore among coconut palms. Only the single-line coastal railway separates the garden from the sand, so the beach is a short walk across the track.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 110 km from Bentota, and the drive usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours on the airport and Southern expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The nine rooms are individually designed and air-conditioned, each with its own balcony or patio. There are five Superior Rooms of about 350 sq ft with a king-size bed and a private patio facing the garden, alongside Deluxe Rooms and two Premium categories, one with a private outdoor terrace and one with a private outdoor jacuzzi. Guests are looked after by a discreet shadow butler service.
The Muse has its own dining room serving both Sri Lankan and international menus, and a small bar.
Within the grounds you can swim in the pool, book a massage, or play croquet and bocce on the lawn, and the hotel also arranges art classes, beach tennis and evenings of Sri Lankan dancing and drumming. Nearby are boat safaris on the Madu River, the turtle hatcheries along this coast and Brief Garden, the garden created by Bevis Bawa.
