It is not classified as strictly endemic but is considered a significant element of Sri Lanka's native flora.

Question 3

Where can Fagraea ceilanica be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in Sri Lanka's wet zone and montane forests, including protected areas like Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the central highlands. It favours humid, shaded environments and is sometimes found growing on rocky outcrops or as an epiphyte on larger trees.

Question 4

What family does Fagraea ceilanica belong to?

Conservation-minded Ayurvedic institutions are working to propagate such species in botanical gardens and medicinal plant farms.

Question 6

How important is plant biodiversity to Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic practice?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic system relies on a wide range of native plant species, many of which are found in the island's forests. The country is classified as a global biodiversity hotspot, and its rich native flora forms the foundation of traditional medical preparations. Protecting natural habitats is therefore directly linked to preserving traditional healing knowledge.

Question 7

Can tourists see Ayurvedic medicinal plants like Fagraea ceilanica on a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Several botanical gardens, spice farms, and Ayurvedic estates across Sri Lanka maintain collections of native medicinal plants. Guided forest treks in protected reserves such as Sinharaja also offer opportunities to encounter wild specimens with the help of a knowledgeable naturalist guide.
