Question 1

What is the difference between coconut cream and coconut milk?

Accepted Answer

Coconut cream is the thick, high-fat first press of grated coconut flesh mixed with a small amount of water. Coconut milk is made from a subsequent press with more water added, producing a thinner liquid. Coconut cream typically contains 20–30% fat, while coconut milk sits closer to 10–15%.

Question 2

Is coconut cream the same as cream of coconut?

Accepted Answer

No. Cream of coconut is a sweetened, processed product mainly used in cocktails such as the piña colada. Coconut cream is an unsweetened culinary ingredient used in cooking. The two are not interchangeable in savoury recipes.

Question 3

How do you make coconut cream at home?

Accepted Answer

Grate fresh mature coconut flesh and combine with a small amount of warm water. Squeeze the mixture firmly through a fine cloth or cheesecloth. The dense liquid that comes through on the first press is coconut cream. Adding more water and pressing again yields thinner coconut milk.

Question 4

What Sri Lankan dishes use coconut cream?

Accepted Answer

Coconut cream is central to kiri bath (milk rice), watalappam (steamed jaggery custard), fish and prawn curries, pol sambol, and the batter for appa (hoppers). It is used both during cooking and as a finishing ingredient to add richness and temper spice.

Question 5

Does coconut cream need to be refrigerated?

Accepted Answer

Freshly extracted coconut cream should be used immediately or refrigerated and consumed within 24 hours. Commercially packaged or canned coconut cream is shelf-stable until opened, after which it should be refrigerated and used within two to three days.

Question 6

Is coconut cream suitable for dairy-free or vegan diets?

Accepted Answer

Yes, coconut cream contains no dairy and no animal products, making it suitable for both dairy-free and fully vegan diets. It is widely used as a substitute for heavy cream in plant-based cooking and baking.
