Question 1

What are the best day trips from Kandy?

Accepted Answer

Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Polonnaruwa ancient city are the most popular full-day excursions. Horton Plains, the Knuckles Range, and Kitulgala are strong alternatives depending on whether you prefer heritage, highland trekking, or adventure activities. Most destinations are reachable within two hours by private vehicle.

Question 2

Can I visit Sigiriya as a day trip from Kandy?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Sigiriya is around 65–70 km north of Kandy and typically reached in 90 minutes to two hours by road. Most tours depart early morning to allow time for both the rock climb and a second stop such as Polonnaruwa or a Dambulla cave temple visit. Returning to Kandy the same evening is comfortable on this schedule.

Question 3

How much does a city tour from Kandy cost?

Accepted Answer

Prices vary by departure point, group size, and the specific itinerary. Private vehicle tours starting from nearby towns such as Dambulla or Sigiriya typically start from around USD 55, while tours originating from Colombo or coastal resorts are priced higher to account for the longer transfer distance. Checking Lakpura's product listings gives current confirmed rates.

Question 4

Is it easy to get around Kandy without a tour?

Accepted Answer

Kandy's central sites — the Temple of the Tooth, lake, and market — are walkable. Tuk-tuks are plentiful for short hops around the city. For excursions to sites further afield such as Sigiriya or Horton Plains, a private vehicle or organised day tour is more practical than public transport, which often requires multiple changes and has limited return services.

Question 5

What is the Esala Perahera and when does it happen?

Accepted Answer

The Esala Perahera is one of Asia's largest Buddhist processions, held annually in Kandy over roughly ten days in July or August. It features elaborately dressed elephants, traditional drummers, fire performers, and Kandyan dancers parading through the city at night. Accommodation books up very early during this period, so planning ahead is essential.

Question 6

Are there family-friendly tours from Kandy?

Accepted Answer

Several excursions suit families well: the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, the Millennium Elephant Foundation visit, and village cooking experiences are all accessible for children. The Sigiriya rock climb involves steep staircases and is better suited to older children and adults with a reasonable level of fitness.

Question 7

Can I combine a Kandy tour with a Colombo transfer?

Accepted Answer

Yes, many travellers do this in both directions — using the Colombo to Kandy transfer as an opportunity to stop at sites along the way, such as the Pinnawala area or a spice garden in Mawanella. Lakpura's city tour products from Colombo typically include private transport so stops can be added to the itinerary on request.

Question 8

What should I wear for tours around Kandy?

Accepted Answer

Light, breathable clothing is appropriate for most sites, but shoulders and knees should be covered when entering temples, including the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Sarongs are often available to borrow or buy at the entrance. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for sites like Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, where the ground is uneven.
