Question 1

What is Anisomeles indica used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In South Asian Ayurvedic tradition, Anisomeles indica has been used to manage fever, reduce inflammation, ease digestive discomfort, and treat minor skin conditions. Poultices and decoctions made from the leaves are the most common preparation forms. These applications are grounded in centuries of indigenous practice and are supported by preliminary phytochemical research.

Question 2

Is Anisomeles indica native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Anisomeles indica is native to tropical and subtropical Asia broadly, including Sri Lanka, India, and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka it grows naturally in the dry and intermediate zones, typically on disturbed or uncultivated ground. It is not endemic to Sri Lanka but is well established as part of the island's documented medicinal flora.

Question 3

What family does Anisomeles indica belong to?

Accepted Answer

Anisomeles indica belongs to the Lamiaceae family, commonly known as the mint family. This makes it a relative of familiar plants such as mint, basil, lavender, and rosemary. Plants in this family are often aromatic, and Anisomeles indica follows that pattern with its distinctively scented leaves.

Question 4

What does Anisomeles indica look like?

Accepted Answer

The plant is a coarse, hairy herb with a square stem characteristic of the Lamiaceae family. Its leaves are toothed and covered in fine hairs, and when crushed they release a noticeable medicinal scent. Small pinkish-purple flowers appear in dense whorled clusters around the stem.

Question 5

Is Anisomeles indica safe to use?

Accepted Answer

Anisomeles indica has a long history of traditional use, but scientific clinical trials validating its safety and efficacy in humans remain limited. Anyone considering using it for medicinal purposes should consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or medical professional before doing so.

Question 6

Where in Sri Lanka can I learn about Ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Spice gardens in the Kandy and Matale regions offer guided introductions to Sri Lanka's medicinal herbs and their traditional uses. Ayurvedic wellness centres across the island provide deeper engagement with herbal treatments. Nature reserves such as Sinharaja also allow visitors to observe a wide variety of native plant species in their natural habitat.

Question 7

What bioactive compounds are found in Anisomeles indica?

Accepted Answer

Research has identified flavonoids, terpenoids, and essential oils in extracts from Anisomeles indica. These compound classes are associated with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties in laboratory studies. The essential oil fraction has attracted particular interest from phytochemists studying South Asian medicinal plants.
