The River House, Balapitiya, Sri Lanka
The River House is a South Asian style villa set on the idyllic shores of the Madhu estuary in Balapitiya, a location that places guests within easy reach of the many sights along the South and West of Sri Lanka. Nestled within a lush seven-acre tropical setting, it is conceived as a timeless retreat — equally suited to a couple seeking secluded privacy, a family, or a close group of friends looking to reconnect.
The property revolves around the gentle rhythms of the Madhu River. Guests can while away their hours in the elevated pool, set out on a relaxing boat ride to explore the river's quieter reaches, or share a canoe on the water at leisure.
Accommodation
Five luxurious sleeping pavilions make up the guest quarters, each named after a Sinhala astrological sign. All are immensely spacious and feature their own sitting areas and private gardens. Of the two master suites, Singha occupies the entire top floor of the villa and has its own private plunge pool. The second master suite, Makare, stands apart from the main villa and is situated in the gardens below; this spacious suite offers an outdoor shower and tub. Kanya suite also features an outdoor shower and tub. Suites Dhanu and Thula can be interconnected and are fitted with butler's hatches — a thoughtful touch for families or groups travelling together.
Dining
The culinary experience at The River House centres on the island's own produce and flavours. Guests may order from an à la carte menu or discuss their personal preferences directly with the chef, who can tailor meals accordingly. The kitchen draws on local cuisine as well as a range of international dishes.
Activities
There is no shortage of ways to fill the days here. On the water, guests can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, river cruises, snorkelling, and fishing. On land, cycling and bird watching make for rewarding excursions into the surrounding landscape. Cultural shows and Ayurveda treatments are among the experiences available within roughly an hour's drive of the property. Back at the villa, a wide range of indoor games — from Scrabble to Pictionary — ensures there is always something to enjoy when the mood calls for something quieter.
Facilities
The villa's five suites each come with an attached bathroom and air conditioning. Shared facilities include a swimming pool, television, room service, a mini bar, telephone, and laundry service, providing a comfortable and well-appointed base for any length of stay.
