Kandy Perahera Pageant, Sri Lanka

Each year during July and August, the city of Kandy comes alive with one of the most spectacular processions in all of Asia. The Esala Perahera, a tradition stretching back some 235 years, is widely regarded as the grandest cultural festival held in Sri Lanka — a breathtaking convergence of music, dance, elaborately adorned elephants, and centuries of living heritage.

The pageant is held in honour and celebration of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, venerated as the palladium of the island nation. A Festival Rooted in Devotion
