Horathapola Estate, Puttalama, Sri Lanka

Hidden within the vast green coconut belt that stretches from Negombo to Puttalam and inland as far as Kurunegala, Horathapola Estate offers a rare glimpse into colonial-era plantation life. The two-storey planter's bungalow at its heart was built in the early 1920s by the property's then British owner and has been lovingly maintained through the decades. Renovated in 2003, the bungalow retains the charm of a bygone era while offering guests genuine comfort amid a still-functioning working estate, which has belonged to the Fernando family since the 1940s.

Situated within about an hour's drive north of Katunayake International Airport, the estate makes an ideal first or last stop for international visitors. Surrounded by a large lawn and tall flowering trees, the bungalow sits quietly tucked away from the surrounding plantation, where coconut, rice, cashew nuts, mangoes and other fruits, along with spices and hardwood trees, are cultivated across 50 acres of lush land.

Accommodation

The bungalow offers two large suites and one two-bedroom family suite. All rooms in the main house are furnished with antique four-poster beds and furniture of the period, evoking the atmosphere of the estate's earliest days. A dépendance adds a slightly more modern room featuring an in-built cement bed with ebony lining. The bathrooms are generously proportioned and thoughtfully redone, and each room enjoys its own private veranda or balcony.

Among the named rooms, Maha Camere is a large room with a four-poster bed, widely regarded as the finest in the villa. Maedae Camere is a triple and double bedroom with a large private terrace overlooking the gardens, and connects with the adjacent double room — known as Podi Camere — making it well suited to a family of five. Watta Camere is a generous ground-floor room looking out over the front garden and plantation.

Food and Dining

Traditional Sri Lankan curries are still prepared in clay pots on a firewood stove, with many of the ingredients grown on the estate itself and spices freshly plucked and ground. A selection of Western dishes and vegetarian meals is also available for those who prefer a different palate.

Activities on the Estate

Walks beneath the shady trees, a swim in the 50-foot pool or a soak in the Jacuzzi, time spent in the extensive library, and simply spreading out across the generous grounds together bring the dream of a holiday in an authentic homestead to life. A bullock cart ride around the estate — offering a close look at how the fruits and spices are grown — is considered a highlight of every stay, enjoyed equally by children and adults.

Exploring the Surroundings

Beyond the estate itself, guests can visit nearby village temples, explore local markets held on Saturdays and Wednesdays, or take bicycle rides along the quiet village roads. The Negombo beach is approximately 30 minutes from the estate, while trekking, bird watching and cycling are all available within about an hour's drive.
