Ayu by TARA is a five-room boutique villa on Galle Matara Road in Mirissa, on Sri Lanka's south coast. With so few rooms it stays quiet and personal. Couples and families can take a single room, and small groups can ask for the whole villa, subject to availability.
The master room on the first floor has a king-size bed, a sea view and a private balcony, and can take an extra bed on request. Three further rooms have queen-size beds: one on the ground floor with a side path to the pool, one on the first floor, and one on the second floor with a small balcony over the canal and greenery. The first-floor twin room has two large single beds. Every room is air-conditioned and en-suite with hot water, and comes with a smart TV, work desk, in-room safe, tea and coffee facilities, a hair dryer and two bottles of drinking water a day.
Outside are a swimming pool, a tropical garden with lotus ponds, a second-floor terrace with long built-in seating, and an open rooftop with sunbeds, a high table and glimpses of the sea through the palms. Breakfast is included, with Western dishes alongside Sri Lankan favourites such as roti, string hoppers and kiribath. Wi-Fi and private parking are free, and staff are on site. The whole property is non-smoking, and pets cannot be accommodated.
The villa is not on the beach: Mirissa Beach and its restaurants are a 10 to 15 minute walk or about three minutes by car, and there is no private beach access. Whale watching boats leave from the nearby harbour, in season from November to April. Coconut Tree Hill and Secret Beach are short tuk-tuk rides away, and the surf at Weligama is about 20 minutes along the coast.
