Sobaco Nature Resort is a small, quiet lodge in Dedduwa, in the green countryside just inland from Bentota on the south-west coast. It has eight rooms set in a private garden that looks out over Dedduwa Lake, and it lies on Bawa Garden Road, almost next door to Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's own country estate. It suits travellers who would rather wake to birdsong and water than to traffic, with the beach a short drive away.
The resort is in Dedduwa, a rural corner of Bentota on the shores of Dedduwa Lake, the wide stretch of the Bentota River system south-east of the town. Lunuganga is a short walk along the same road. Induruwa railway station is about 2 km away and Bentota station about 3.3 km, and Bentota Beach is roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive.
The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) takes around 2 hours, depending on traffic around Colombo, following the expressways south and then the country lanes inland from Bentota to Dedduwa. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the resort in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. There are eight rooms, each with a large bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning and a balcony with two chairs. Big windows look out over either the garden or the water, so the setting is part of every room.
The resort has its own restaurant, and guests regularly mention the fresh, home-style food and the friendly staff. The garden, which faces the lake, is the place to sit in the evening and watch the sun go down over the water.
The resort can arrange day tours, village tours and boat safaris on the lake and river, where mangroves line the banks. Lunuganga, with its gardens laid out by Geoffrey Bawa over some fifty years, is right on the doorstep, and Bentota's beach, water sports and river trips are a short drive away. Lakpura can also arrange private transfers and day tours along the coast from the resort.
