Okvin River Villa is a four-bedroom holiday bungalow on the banks of the Bentota River, set in a landscaped garden with lawns, hammocks and a swimming pool, and a boat house at the water's edge. The rooms are furnished with antiques alongside modern comforts, and guests can book a single room or take the whole villa for a getaway with family or friends.
The villa stands at Warapitiya, off Ritiketiya Road (Meegama Road) near Dharga Town, on the inland stretch of the Bentota River away from the busy coast road. It looks out over the river, its mangroves and the garden. Aluthgama railway station is about 2.6 km away and Bentota station about 3.2 km as the crow flies, and the beach is roughly a 15-minute drive. By car the villa can be reached either from the Colombo to Galle coast road through Aluthgama or from the Southern Expressway, leaving at the Welipenna interchange.
The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) usually takes around 2 hours, around Colombo and south on the expressway, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The four guest rooms are named after local trees, Kumbuk, Kirala, Kaduru and Kadol. All are air-conditioned and furnished with antique pieces, with wardrobe space, an in-room safe and Wi-Fi, and private balconies look over the river, the mangroves or the garden. The bungalow can be booked room by room or as a whole, subject to availability.
An in-house chef cooks to guests' preferences, including a range of Sri Lankan dishes, and breakfast is served daily. Dinner at the boat house beside the river is the highlight, and the boat house is also the place for a drink as the light changes over the water in the evening and early morning. Guests who take the whole villa can also fire up the barbecue on the lawn by the river.
Boat rides on the Bentota River can be arranged from the villa, lasting one to three hours and winding through mangroves, cinnamon plantations and past craft shops along the banks. The beach and Bentota's water sports are a short drive away. Brief Garden, the estate created by Bevis Bawa, and Lunuganga, the country garden of his brother Geoffrey Bawa, each deserve an unhurried visit, and the Kande Viharaya temple in Aluthgama is known for its huge seated Buddha statue.
