Sudu Wedda Noliyu Katha

から¥316

A collection of Sinhala stories by Jayaweera Wijayapala, worked up from story outlines that originated with R. L. Spittel, a surgeon by profession who also wrote. Wijayapala took those skeletal narratives and rebuilt them as full stories in Sinhala.

The subject matter is Sri Lanka's natural landscape and the life of its rural and forest communities, and the human qualities the writing draws out from within that life. The publisher's own account of the book describes it as opening up a side of the country its readers have not seen.

The text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English in it, and no parallel translation, so it will suit readers who are comfortable reading Sinhala prose — whether in Sri Lanka or among Sinhala-reading households abroad looking to keep that reading going. Buyers who do not read the script should know this before ordering.

It is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co., a long-established Colombo house publishing in Sinhala and English. The book will interest readers who already know Spittel's name and want to meet this material in Sinhala, as well as anyone drawn to short fiction rooted in the island's wilderness and village life.
