A children's story by Sybil Wettasinghe, first published in Sinhala and issued here in Tamil translation by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo. Wettasinghe was an artist as well as a writer of stories for children, and her books have long been a fixture of Sri Lankan childhood reading in both of the island's main languages.
The text is entirely in Tamil, set in Tamil script. There is no English in the book, and no parallel Sinhala text — this is the Tamil edition of a work that appeared originally in Sinhala, where it carried the title Sarungale. The Tamil title Pattam, like the Sinhala one, is the word for a kite.
It will suit Tamil-reading households at home and abroad, Tamil-medium classrooms and libraries, and families keeping a second language alive with books children actually want to open. Readers outside Sri Lanka building a collection of Wettasinghe's work in translation will want it for that reason; readers who do not read Tamil should look instead for the Sinhala or English versions of her stories.
