Nanda Ha Sarana

から¥315

A Sinhala story about two boys of the same age who meet at school. Nanda enters the order and takes up the life of a monk, but ordination does not end the friendship: Sarana stays close to him, and through the young monk he becomes a regular presence at the temple. That connection changes the course of his own life, and of his father's, who had fallen into bad ways.

The book is written entirely in Sinhala by Anula De Silva and published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo. There is no English text in it, so it will suit readers who are comfortable reading Sinhala — families abroad keeping up a child's reading in the language, Sinhala classes and school libraries outside Sri Lanka, and adult readers who prefer fiction in their first language.

The theme — friendship holding across a change of calling, and the temple as the thing that steadies a household — places it within a familiar line of Sinhala moral storytelling for younger readers. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should order it on that basis: a Sinhala narrative, straightforwardly told, carrying a clear lesson about the company one keeps.
