About this experience
Depart from your Tangalle hotel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle and head west along the southern coast for a full day of distinct stops. Your first destination is Lunuganga, the country estate of celebrated architect Sir Geoffrey Bawa — a landscape of terraced gardens, water views, and architectural surprises that rewards slow exploration. From there, the guide takes you to the Meetiyagoda Moonstones Mines, where you can watch miners extract Sri Lanka's prized blue moonstones directly from the earth.
The day ends at Balapitiya, where you board a boat for a safari along the Madu River — a network of mangrove islands sheltering birds, water monitors, and small fishing communities. Hotel pickup and drop-off, your English-speaking chauffeur guide, the Madu River boat safari, and a water bottle per person are all covered. Entrance tickets and meals are not included. The full tour runs 11 hours and is open to guests aged five and above.
