Question 1

What is Tinospora glabra used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Tinospora glabra and related species in the genus are traditionally used to support immune function, reduce fever, and address digestive complaints. The stems and roots are the primary plant parts used, typically prepared as decoctions or powders. It is also incorporated into compound formulations alongside other medicinal herbs.

Question 2

Is Tinospora glabra the same as Guduchi?

Accepted Answer

Tinospora glabra is a distinct species from Tinospora cordifolia, which is the species most commonly referred to as Guduchi or Giloy in classical Ayurvedic texts. Both belong to the same genus and share therapeutic similarities, but they are botanically separate plants with potentially different phytochemical profiles. In Sri Lankan practice, regional species like T. glabra may be used alongside or in place of T. cordifolia.

Question 3

Where does Tinospora glabra grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found in lowland tropical forests, forest margins, and scrubland across Sri Lanka, where it climbs over supporting vegetation. It favours warm, humid environments. Its populations overlap with some of the island's protected forest areas, where biodiversity conservation helps maintain its natural habitat.

Question 4

What plant family does Tinospora glabra belong to?

Accepted Answer

Tinospora glabra belongs to the family Menispermaceae, a family of flowering plants widespread across tropical and subtropical regions. Many plants in this family have a documented history of use in traditional medicine across South and Southeast Asia.

Question 5

What bioactive compounds are found in Tinospora glabra?

Accepted Answer

Research on the Tinospora genus has identified alkaloids such as berberine and palmatine, along with terpenoids, glycosides, and polysaccharides. These compounds are associated with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating properties. The specific phytochemical profile of T. glabra as a distinct species requires further dedicated research.

Question 6

Is Tinospora glabra endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Tinospora glabra is not strictly endemic to Sri Lanka; it is distributed across tropical Asia. However, it is part of Sri Lanka's officially recognised catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants and is used within the island's traditional medicine system. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda oversees its classification and use within registered preparations.

Question 7

Can tourists learn about Ayurvedic plants like Tinospora glabra while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ayurvedic centres, herbal gardens, and cultural tour programmes — particularly in the Hill Country and around Kandy — often include introductions to medicinal plants used in traditional Sri Lankan medicine. Some wellness retreats offer structured programmes covering both the theory and practice of Ayurveda, including plant identification sessions.
