Question 1

Where exactly is Thirappane in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Thirappane is a small town in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, located at approximately 8.22°N, 80.52°E. It sits roughly 30 km south of Anuradhapura and within easy driving distance of Ritigala, Kalawewa, and Wilpattu National Park.

Question 2

What is the nearest national park to Thirappane?

Accepted Answer

Kalawewa National Park is the closest protected area to Thirappane, centred on the ancient Kalawewa reservoir. Wilpattu National Park, the island's largest, is accessible to the north-west, and Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve lies nearby to the east.

Question 3

Can I visit Ritigala as a day trip from Thirappane?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ritigala is one of the most accessible destinations from Thirappane and makes an excellent half-day excursion. Entrance tickets are required; the Archaeological Department manages the site, and a local guide is strongly recommended as the paths through the forest are not always clearly marked.

Question 4

How far is Thirappane from Anuradhapura?

Accepted Answer

Thirappane is approximately 30 km south of Anuradhapura by road, typically a 30-to-45-minute drive depending on conditions. The route passes through dry-zone agricultural land and small villages characteristic of the North Central Province.

Question 5

Are there leopards in Kalawewa National Park?

Accepted Answer

Leopards are present in Kalawewa, though sightings are less frequent than in Wilpattu or Yala. The park is more reliably rewarding for elephant encounters and waterbird viewing around the ancient tank.

Question 6

What is the best route from Colombo to Thirappane?

Accepted Answer

Most travellers follow the A9 north from Colombo through Kurunegala and Dambulla to Anuradhapura, then take secondary roads south to Thirappane. The total distance from Colombo is roughly 190 km, and the drive takes around three to four hours by private vehicle.

Question 7

Is there accommodation in Thirappane itself?

Accepted Answer

Thirappane has limited tourist accommodation. Most visitors choose to stay in Anuradhapura or Habarana, both of which offer a broader selection of hotels and guesthouses and are within easy driving distance of Thirappane and its nearby attractions.

Question 8

Can Lakpura arrange a safari at Wilpattu departing from Thirappane?

Accepted Answer

Lakpura offers Wilpattu safaris departing from the Anuradhapura area, which is the closest practical hub. If you are based near Thirappane, a private transfer to the park entrance can be organised as part of the same booking.
