Question 1

Can you pick your own strawberries in Nuwara Eliya?

Accepted Answer

Some private farms around Ambewela and Hakgala Road do allow visitors to pick strawberries directly from the plants, though this is not universally offered. It is best to ask at the farm gate when you arrive. Even where self-picking is not available, staff will usually pick to order while you wait.

Question 2

How much do strawberries cost at Nuwara Eliya farms?

Accepted Answer

Prices at roadside stalls and farm shops are generally very reasonable compared to Colombo supermarkets. Exact prices vary by season and supply, but small punnets are typically sold by weight or by the container. Buying directly at the farm or roadside stall is consistently cheaper than purchasing pre-packaged berries in the city.

Question 3

Are the Nuwara Eliya strawberry farms open to tourists every day?

Accepted Answer

Most roadside stalls and small farm shops operate daily during daylight hours, though hours are informal and can vary. Larger operations like Ambewela Farm tend to be more consistently accessible. Visiting on a weekday morning usually means smaller crowds and fresher stock.

Question 4

How far is it from Colombo to the Nuwara Eliya strawberry farms?

Accepted Answer

Nuwara Eliya is approximately 170–180 kilometres from Colombo by road, typically a four-to-five-hour drive depending on traffic and the route taken. The train from Colombo Fort to Nanu Oya (the nearest station to Nuwara Eliya) takes around six hours and offers scenic highland views. From Nanu Oya station, the farm area is accessible by tuk-tuk or taxi.

Question 5

What strawberry products can I buy to take home from Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Locally produced strawberry jams and preserves are available at farm shops and the Nuwara Eliya market. Strawberry-flavoured Ceylon teas — blended by brands such as Dilmah, Mlesna, and Basilur — are widely available in gift packaging and travel well. These make practical, lightweight souvenirs compared to fresh fruit.

Question 6

Is Ambewela Farm the same as the strawberry farm in Nuwara Eliya?

Accepted Answer

Ambewela Farm is primarily a dairy operation managed by the government-linked Milco group, but strawberries are grown on plots in the surrounding area and sold at nearby stalls. The name 'strawberry farm' is used loosely in the region and refers to several independent small farms and roadside operations along Ambewela Road, not a single attraction.

Question 7

What is the best month to buy strawberries in Nuwara Eliya?

Accepted Answer

Quality and supply are generally best between December and April, coinciding with the cooler, drier period in the central highlands. January and February tend to be particularly good months. Berries are available at other times of year but output can be lower during the wetter monsoon months from May to September.
