Question 1

What is the south entrance to Yala National Park?

Accepted Answer

The southern entrance to Yala National Park leads into Block I, the most frequently visited and wildlife-rich section of the park. It is located near Palatupana, off the road from Tissamaharama. Most jeep safaris depart from or near this gate.

Question 2

Do I need to book tickets before reaching the south entrance of a national park?

Accepted Answer

Pre-booking is strongly recommended during the peak season from December to April, when queues at entrance gates can be long. Many operators, including Lakpura, can arrange pre-purchased permits so you enter without delay. Walk-in tickets are usually available but are not guaranteed during busy periods.

Question 3

Can I drive my own car into a national park through the south entrance?

Accepted Answer

Private cars are not permitted inside the boundaries of Sri Lanka's national parks. Visitors must transfer to an approved safari jeep or 4WD, which can be hired at or near the entrance gate. Many visitors arrange jeep hire through their tour operator before arriving.

Question 4

What time do national park south entrances open?

Accepted Answer

Most national park gates open at first light, typically around 6:00 am, and close in the evening before sunset — commonly around 6:00 pm. Specific times can vary by park and season. Arriving close to opening time gives the best chance of seeing wildlife when animals are most active.

Question 5

Is there parking at the south entrance of Sri Lanka's heritage sites?

Accepted Answer

Major heritage sites and national parks generally have a designated parking area adjacent to the entrance gate. Space is usually adequate at off-peak times, but can fill quickly on weekends and public holidays. Arriving early avoids both parking and ticketing delays.

Question 6

How far is the south entrance of Udawalawe from the nearest town?

Accepted Answer

The main entrance to Udawalawe National Park is a short drive from Udawalawe town, which sits along the road connecting Ratnapura and Hambantota. From Colombo, the drive takes roughly two and a half to three hours via the Southern Expressway and then inland roads.

Question 7

Are guides mandatory when entering through the south entrance?

Accepted Answer

Inside national parks, a licensed park tracker or naturalist guide is typically required in addition to the jeep driver. At archaeological heritage sites, guides are optional but add considerable value given the depth of history at places like Polonnaruwa. Booking a guide in advance through a licensed DMC ensures a qualified professional.
