Accepted Answer

Richmond Hill Railway Station is located in the Galle District, Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It sits on the Coast Line of Sri Lanka Railways, 111.4 km south of Colombo Fort. The next station toward Galle is Galle Station itself, making Richmond Hill the penultimate stop before the city from the north.

Question 2

How many trains stop at Richmond Hill Station per day?

Accepted Answer

Approximately 14 trains call at Richmond Hill on a typical day, running in both directions along the Coast Line. Not all services stop at this halt — slower stopping trains are more likely to call here than intercity expresses. Always verify your specific service stops at Richmond Hill before boarding.

Question 3

How long does the train from Colombo to Richmond Hill take?

Accepted Answer

The journey covers 111.4 km and typically takes between two and three hours depending on the service type. Intercity expresses with fewer stops are the fastest option, while slower stopping trains take longer but offer excellent coastal scenery along the way.

Question 4

Is Richmond Hill Station close to Galle Fort?

Accepted Answer

Travellers specifically visiting Galle Fort are generally better served by alighting at Galle Station, which is closer to the Fort district. Question 5

How do I get from Colombo Airport to Richmond Hill, Galle?

Accepted Answer

Bandaranaike International Airport is not on the Coast Line rail network. Alternatively, you can travel into Colombo Fort by road and then board a southbound Coast Line train to Richmond Hill or Galle Station.

Question 6

Can I buy a train ticket at Richmond Hill Station?

Accepted Answer

Richmond Hill is a minor halt with limited on-platform facilities. For reserved seating on intercity services or longer-distance bookings, it is advisable to purchase tickets at Galle Station or through Sri Lanka Railways' online reservation portal in advance. Unreserved second and third class tickets may be purchased on board.
