Question 1

What is Quassia amara used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Quassia amara is primarily used as a digestive tonic, antiparasitic remedy, and febrifuge. Its intensely bitter bark and wood are prepared as decoctions or cold infusions and prescribed for conditions ranging from poor appetite to intestinal worms. It is also used to support liver function in some traditional formulations.

Question 2

Is Quassia amara found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Quassia amara is catalogued among Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants and is cultivated or naturalised in parts of the island. Originally native to tropical South America, it was introduced to Asia over centuries of trade. It is used by Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practitioners, particularly for digestive and antiparasitic purposes.

Question 3

What are the active ingredients in Quassia amara?

Accepted Answer

The primary active compounds are quassinoids, especially quassin and neoquassin, which are responsible for the plant's extreme bitterness. These compounds have been studied for antimalarial, antiparasitic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The plant also contains alkaloids and other secondary metabolites that contribute to its biological activity.

Question 4

Is Quassia amara safe to use?

Accepted Answer

When used appropriately and under professional guidance, Quassia amara has a long history of traditional use. However, it should be avoided during pregnancy and not taken in high doses for prolonged periods. Anyone with liver conditions or who is taking prescription medicines should consult a qualified Ayurvedic or medical practitioner before use.

Question 5

What is the difference between Quassia amara and Jamaican quassia?

Accepted Answer

Both Quassia amara (Surinam quassia) and Picrasma excelsa (Jamaican quassia) belong to the same plant family and share bitter quassinoid compounds. Quassia amara is a smaller shrub more commonly found in tropical Asian cultivation, while Picrasma excelsa is a larger Caribbean tree. In South Asian Ayurvedic practice, Quassia amara is the species most frequently encountered.

Question 6

How is Quassia amara prepared as a herbal remedy?

Accepted Answer

The most common preparation is a decoction made by simmering the wood chips or bark in water to concentrate the bitter compounds. A gentler alternative is a cold infusion, prepared by soaking the wood chips in water overnight. Both methods are used by Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practitioners, with the preparation and dosage determined by the condition being treated.

Question 7
