Question 1

What is Pothos hookeri?

Accepted Answer

Pothos hookeri is a wild climbing plant in the Araceae family, native to the humid forests of Sri Lanka and other parts of tropical Asia. It is a true Pothos species, distinct from the common ornamental houseplant sold under that name. It is listed in Sri Lanka's catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Is Pothos hookeri the same as the common houseplant pothos?

Accepted Answer

No. The popular houseplant sold as pothos is Epipremnum aureum, a different genus that was historically classified under Pothos. Pothos hookeri is a true member of the Pothos genus — a wild forest climber not typically found in cultivation. The two are related within the Araceae family but are distinct species with different characteristics.

Question 3

Where can Pothos hookeri be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows in the wet and intermediate climatic zones of Sri Lanka, particularly in lowland and mid-elevation tropical forests with consistently high humidity. It is typically found climbing tree trunks in shaded gullies, along stream banks, and within mature forest patches such as those protected within nature reserves.

Question 4

What are the medicinal uses of Pothos hookeri in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Pothos hookeri appears in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant catalogue as a species of traditional medicinal interest. Across related aroids in South Asian herbal traditions, plant parts have been used in preparations for inflammatory and rheumatic conditions, though these uses require specialist preparation to neutralise naturally occurring irritants in the raw plant.

Question 5

Is Pothos hookeri safe to handle or consume?

Accepted Answer

Like many aroids, Pothos hookeri contains calcium oxalate crystals, which cause irritation to skin, mouth, and digestive tissues if the raw plant is handled carelessly or ingested without proper preparation. Traditional medicinal use always involves specific processing methods. Foraging or self-administering preparations from wild aroids without expert guidance is not recommended.

Question 6

Is Pothos hookeri an endangered plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Detailed conservation assessments for this specific species are limited. However, plants reliant on mature humid forest habitats face indirect pressure from deforestation and habitat loss. Conservation of Sri Lanka's protected forest areas helps safeguard the ecological conditions on which species like Pothos hookeri depend.

Question 7

Can I see wild aroids like Pothos hookeri on a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Visitors with a botanical interest can encounter native aroids and other forest understory plants in protected areas such as Sinharaja Forest Reserve and other wet-zone nature reserves. Guided nature walks with a knowledgeable naturalist offer the best chance of spotting and correctly identifying such forest plants.
