Question 1

What is Plumbago zeylanica used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Plumbago zeylanica root is primarily used as a digestive stimulant, anti-inflammatory agent, and component in formulations for rheumatic and metabolic conditions. It is one of the ten roots in the classical Dasamula compound and appears in preparations such as Yogaraja Guggulu. Traditional use also covers topical applications for joint pain and skin conditions.

Question 2

Is Plumbago zeylanica the same as Ceylon leadwort?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Plumbago zeylanica is commonly known as Ceylon leadwort or white leadwort, reflecting both its Sri Lankan association and its white flowers. It is distinct from the ornamental blue-flowered Plumbago auriculata often found in gardens. The 'zeylanica' part of its scientific name derives from Zeilan, a historical name for Sri Lanka.

Question 3

What is the active compound in Plumbago zeylanica?

Accepted Answer

The principal bioactive compound is plumbagin, a naphthoquinone concentrated mainly in the roots. Plumbagin has been studied for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. Because of its potency, raw or concentrated preparations can be toxic, making professional Ayurvedic guidance essential.

Question 4

Where can Plumbago zeylanica be found growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, commonly along roadsides, forest margins, and disturbed land. It is also cultivated in home herb gardens and Ayurvedic wellness centres across the island. The north-central and north-western dry lowlands represent some of its densest natural stands.

Question 5

Is it safe to use Plumbago zeylanica at home?

Accepted Answer

Self-medication with raw Plumbago zeylanica root is not recommended due to the risk of skin irritation, gastrointestinal problems, and toxicity at uncontrolled doses. Traditional use always involves processed preparations prescribed by qualified practitioners. Pregnant women in particular should avoid it without professional medical advice.
