Question 1

What is Pandanus thwaitesii used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Pandanus thwaitesii is catalogued as a medicinal plant in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Various parts of the plant — including leaves and roots — are traditionally used in remedies related to inflammation, skin conditions, and general wellness. As with all Ayurvedic treatments, use should be guided by a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Is Pandanus thwaitesii endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Pandanus thwaitesii is a species documented specifically from Sri Lanka and named after botanist G.H.K. Thwaites, who catalogued much of the island's flora in the 19th century. Sri Lanka's status as a biodiversity hotspot means it hosts numerous plant species with very restricted natural ranges, and this screwpine is part of that endemic botanical heritage.

Question 3

Where can I see Pandanus thwaitesii growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is found in Sri Lanka's lowland wet zone, particularly near rivers, wetlands, and coastal margins with high humidity. Environments such as the Madu Ganga wetland system on the southwestern coast support similar riparian and screwpine vegetation and are accessible to visitors.

Question 4

What does Pandanus thwaitesii look like?

Accepted Answer

Like other screwpines, it is a shrub-like perennial with long, spirally arranged, strap-like leaves and distinctive prop roots that emerge from the lower trunk to support the plant. The overall form is bold and architectural, well-adapted to waterlogged or coastal soils.

Question 5

How is Pandanus thwaitesii different from the common pandan leaf?

Accepted Answer

The common pandan used in cooking across Southeast Asia is Pandanus amaryllifolius, valued for its distinctive vanilla-like fragrance. Pandanus thwaitesii is a separate Sri Lankan species within the same genus, recognised primarily for its medicinal rather than culinary properties.

Question 6

Are Sri Lanka's native medicinal plants at risk?

Accepted Answer

Habitat loss and unsustainable wild collection do pose threats to some species in Sri Lanka's medicinal flora. Conservation efforts through protected areas, botanical gardens, and cultivated Ayurvedic herb farms are helping to safeguard these plants. Sri Lanka's Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one flagship area protecting lowland wet-zone biodiversity.

Question 7

Can I learn about Ayurvedic plants during a trip to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ayurveda resorts, herb farms, and cultural tours across the island offer guided introductions to Sri Lanka's medicinal plant tradition. Botanical gardens at Peradeniya and Henarathgoda provide excellent overviews of both native and cultivated species, and many eco-lodges incorporate plant walks led by knowledgeable local guides.
