Question 1

What is Oldenlandia biflora used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, Oldenlandia biflora has traditionally been used for its cooling, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been applied in preparations targeting fevers, urinary tract complaints, and skin conditions, typically as a decoction or fresh juice. Traditional use should not be taken as a clinical health claim, and a qualified practitioner should always be consulted.

Question 2

Where does Oldenlandia biflora grow naturally?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found across the wet and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, favouring moist, open habitats such as paddy field margins, roadsides, and secondary forest clearings at low to mid elevations. It is a common sight in disturbed ground throughout lowland Sri Lanka.

Question 3

What does Oldenlandia biflora look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a small, low-growing annual herb with slender, prostrate stems, narrow opposite leaves, and tiny white flowers that typically appear in pairs — hence the name biflora, meaning two-flowered. The whole plant is rarely more than a few centimetres tall.

Question 4

Is Oldenlandia biflora the same as Oldenlandia corymbosa?

Accepted Answer

They are related but distinct species within the same genus. Both are small white-flowered herbs found in similar habitats across Sri Lanka and South Asia, and both are used in traditional medicine. However, their phytochemical profiles differ, and botanical identification requires close examination of floral and vegetative features.

Question 5

What family does Oldenlandia biflora belong to?

Accepted Answer

Oldenlandia biflora belongs to the family Rubiaceae, the same plant family that includes coffee, gardenia, and many tropical medicinal herbs. Within Rubiaceae, it is placed in the order Gentianales. The species was first formally described by Linnaeus.

Question 6

Is Oldenlandia biflora recognised by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The species is included in the official catalog of ayurvedic medicinal plants recognised by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda, reflecting its established status within the country's indigenous medicine framework. This formal recognition distinguishes it from purely anecdotal folk uses.

Question 7

Can travellers encounter Oldenlandia biflora during a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the plant is common in lowland and mid-elevation wet zone areas and is often visible alongside rice paddies and in secondary vegetation near roadsides. Visitors with an interest in botany or ayurvedic plants may encounter it during rural or nature-focused tours, though its small size means it is easily overlooked without guidance.
