Question 1

Where exactly is Midigama in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Midigama is a small coastal town on Sri Lanka's southern shore, located approximately 169 km south of Colombo. It sits between Weligama to the west and Ahangama to the east, within the Southern Province. Its coordinates are roughly 5.9648° N, 80.3821° E.

Question 2

Is Midigama good for surfing?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Midigama is well regarded among surfers for its reef breaks. The left-hand wave known as Lazy Left suits intermediate riders, while a nearby right-hander is faster and more demanding. The best surf season runs from November through March, aligned with the dry season on the southern coast.

Question 3

How far is Midigama from Galle?

Accepted Answer

Midigama is approximately 20 km east of Galle along the coastal road. The drive typically takes around 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. This makes Galle — including the UNESCO-listed Dutch Fort — an easy half-day excursion from Midigama.

Question 4

Can I watch whales from Midigama?

Accepted Answer

Whale watching boats depart from Mirissa, which is around 10 km east of Midigama. Blue whales and sperm whales are the main sightings, with the peak season running from December to April. Most operators offer shared or private boat excursions that depart before sunrise.

Question 5

How do I get from Colombo Airport to Midigama?

Accepted Answer

The most direct route is a private transfer via the Southern Expressway, which typically takes around two to two-and-a-half hours from Bandaranaike International Airport. The coastal train from Colombo Fort to Midigama station is a scenic alternative, though journey times are longer. Lakpura arranges private airport-to-Midigama transfers on request.

Question 6

Does Lakpura offer accommodation in Midigama?

Accepted Answer

Lakpura does not currently list accommodation properties in Midigama. The company does, however, arrange private transfers to and from the town, connecting guests staying at properties elsewhere on the south coast or further afield.

Question 7

What wildlife can I see near Midigama?

Accepted Answer

Sea turtles occasionally feed around the reef near Midigama, and turtle conservation hatcheries operate at Kosgoda, roughly 40 km north. For larger wildlife, Yala National Park — known for leopards and a wide range of bird species — is around 90–100 km to the east and accessible on a day trip.

Question 8

Is Midigama suitable for families with children?

Accepted Answer

Midigama can suit families who prefer a quiet, relaxed environment. The beach is calm enough for paddling outside the monsoon months, and the nearby attractions — whale watching, Galle Fort, and turtle hatcheries — work well for children. The town itself has limited dedicated family facilities, so most visitors combine it with a broader south coast itinerary.
