Question 1

Who was King Valagamba of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

King Valagamba (also called Vattagamani Abhaya) was a ruler of the Anuradhapura kingdom in the first century BCE. He is best remembered for surviving fourteen years of exile after being ousted by South Indian chiefs, reclaiming his throne, and commissioning the first written recording of the Pali Tipitaka. His story is recorded in detail in the Mahavamsa, the ancient Pali chronicle.

Question 2

Why is King Valagamba important to Buddhism?

Accepted Answer

Valagamba ordered the Theravada Buddhist canon — the Pali Tipitaka — to be committed to writing for the first time, at the Aluvihara Rock Temple near Matale around 29 BCE. Before this, the entire canon was preserved through oral recitation. This written text became the scriptural foundation for Theravada traditions across Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos.

Question 3

What is the Abhayagiri Vihara and who built it?

Accepted Answer

The Abhayagiri Vihara is a vast ancient monastery complex in Anuradhapura, founded by King Valagamba to honour the monk Mahanaga who sheltered him during his exile. At its peak it housed thousands of monks and became a centre of Mahayana and Vajrayana scholarship attracting visitors from across Asia. The Abhayagiri Dagoba still stands and is part of the UNESCO-listed Sacred City of Anuradhapura.

Question 4

How long was King Valagamba in exile?

Accepted Answer

According to the Mahavamsa, Valagamba spent approximately fourteen years in exile after being driven from Anuradhapura by a series of South Indian chiefs around 103 BCE. He hid in the forested interior of Sri Lanka, supported by rural communities and Buddhist monks, before mustering the forces needed to reclaim his throne around 89 BCE.

Question 5

Where was the Pali Canon first written down?

Accepted Answer

The Pali Tipitaka was first transcribed onto palm leaves at the Aluvihara Rock Temple, located near Matale in Sri Lanka's Central Province, during the reign of King Valagamba. The site is still an active Buddhist monastery and is open to respectful visitors, with cave shrines containing historical murals.

Question 6

Can I visit sites associated with King Valagamba in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Abhayagiri Dagoba and monastery ruins in Anuradhapura are the primary monuments Valagamba left behind and are accessible to visitors as part of the UNESCO Sacred City. The Aluvihara Rock Temple near Matale, where the Pali Canon was first written, is another significant site. Both can be included in a tour of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle.

Question 7

What does the Mahavamsa say about King Valagamba?

Accepted Answer

The Mahavamsa, compiled by monks of the Mahavihara in Anuradhapura, devotes considerable narrative space to Valagamba's story, framing his exile and restoration as a struggle to protect Buddhism on the island. It records his years in hiding, his military campaigns to retake the throne, his construction of the Abhayagiri Vihara, and the council at which the Tipitaka was written down. Historians treat the religious framing with nuance but accept the broad political narrative.

Question 8

How does King Valagamba compare to other ancient Sri Lankan kings?

Accepted Answer

Among the many rulers recorded in Sri Lankan chronicles, Valagamba is considered especially significant because his legacy was cultural and religious as much as military. While kings like Dutugamunu are celebrated for unification and Devanampiya Tissa for receiving Buddhism, Valagamba is unique for preserving Buddhist scripture in written form — an act whose impact extended far beyond Sri Lanka's borders.
