Question 1

Is Kankesanthurai the last train station in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Kankesanthurai is the northern terminus of Sri Lanka's Northern Line, making it one of the most northerly railway stations on the island. It sits on the Jaffna Peninsula in the Northern Province, close to the Palk Strait. While Point Pedro is geographically the northernmost tip of Sri Lanka, Kankesanthurai holds the distinction of being the end of the rail line in that direction.

Question 2

How long does the train journey from Colombo to Kankesanthurai take?

Accepted Answer

The full journey from Colombo Fort to Kankesanthurai typically takes around ten to twelve hours depending on the service and number of intermediate stops. Overnight trains are available and are a practical option for covering the distance comfortably. First class air-conditioned carriages are recommended for such a long journey.

Question 3

When did train services to Kankesanthurai resume after the civil war?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka Railways progressively restored the Northern Line following the end of the civil conflict in 2009. Regular services between Colombo and Jaffna resumed in 2014, and the extension to Kankesanthurai was restored as part of the broader northern rail rehabilitation programme. The reopening was seen as a significant step in reconnecting the north with the rest of the country.

Question 4

Do I need to book train tickets to Kankesanthurai in advance?

Accepted Answer

Advance booking is strongly recommended for first and second class seats, especially during public holidays, school vacation periods, and around Poya days when demand is high. Tickets can be purchased at Colombo Fort Station, Jaffna Station, or through the Sri Lanka Railways online ticketing system. Third class carriages are unreserved and do not require advance purchase.

Question 5

What is there to do near Kankesanthurai Railway Station?

Accepted Answer

The area around Kankesanthurai offers a quiet coastal experience, with a beach popular among local residents and proximity to historic sites on the Jaffna Peninsula. Point Pedro, the island's geographic northern tip, is a short drive east. Jaffna city, with its fort, kovils, and distinct Tamil culture, is around 20 kilometres to the south.

Question 6

How many trains run to Kankesanthurai each day?

Accepted Answer

Around 14 trains typically call at Kankesanthurai on a standard operating day, though not all services run seven days a week. Schedules can change, so it is advisable to check the current timetable directly with Sri Lanka Railways or by calling the station on 025-3246526 before travel.

Accepted Answer

The Jaffna District and the wider Northern Province have been open to tourists since the end of the civil conflict in 2009, and the region has seen growing visitor numbers over the past decade. As with any destination, it is sensible to check current travel advisories from your home country's foreign ministry before travelling.
