Question 1

What is Jatropha gossypiifolia used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic and traditional Sri Lankan medicine, Jatropha gossypiifolia has been used externally to treat skin conditions, wounds, and boils, and internally — in very controlled formulations — for digestive complaints. The latex has been applied topically for dental pain in some traditional contexts. Due to the plant's toxicity, all use should be supervised by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 2

Is Jatropha gossypiifolia poisonous?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the plant is toxic. All parts contain compounds including phorbol esters and curcin, which can cause severe skin irritation and gastrointestinal effects if ingested without proper processing. Seeds are particularly dangerous and should never be consumed raw. Traditional use is always guided by specialist knowledge of dosing and preparation.

Question 3

What is the difference between Jatropha gossypiifolia and Jatropha gossypiifolia var. elegans?

Accepted Answer

The variety elegans is a botanical subdivision of the parent species Jatropha gossypiifolia, distinguished primarily by foliar characteristics that give it a more refined appearance. In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic cataloguing, it is noted separately to reflect observed differences in morphology, though both share broadly similar phytochemical profiles and traditional applications.

Question 4

Where does Jatropha gossypiifolia grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is most commonly found in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, growing in well-drained sandy or rocky soils along roadsides, scrubland margins, and homestead gardens. It is drought-tolerant and less commonly encountered in the wet zone hill country.

Question 5

What active compounds are found in Jatropha gossypiifolia?

Accepted Answer

Scientific studies have identified alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, cyclopeptide alkaloids, and diterpenes in the plant. These phytochemicals are the subject of ongoing pharmacological research focused on antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Question 6

Is Jatropha gossypiifolia recognised by Sri Lanka's government as a medicinal plant?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is catalogued among the official list of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda under the Ministry of Health. This recognition reflects its established place in the country's ethnopharmacological heritage.

Question 7

What family does Jatropha gossypiifolia belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, a large and diverse plant family that includes species such as cassava, rubber trees, and poinsettias. Like many Euphorbiaceae, Jatropha gossypiifolia produces a milky latex throughout its tissues.
