Question 1

What is Dopatrium junceum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Dopatrium junceum is used for its perceived cooling and purifying properties. Traditional practitioners apply the aerial parts of the plant in formulations addressing inflammation and skin-related conditions. It is formally recognised in Sri Lanka's national catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Where does Dopatrium junceum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in wet, open habitats such as paddy field margins, seasonal wetlands, irrigation channels, and shallow ponds. It is most commonly found across the lowland dry zone and intermediate zone of Sri Lanka, particularly in areas with a strong agricultural and irrigation history.

Question 3

What family does Dopatrium junceum belong to?

Accepted Answer

Dopatrium junceum belongs to the family Plantaginaceae, under the order Lamiales. It was previously classified in Scrophulariaceae before molecular studies led to the reclassification of many genera within that family. The genus Dopatrium contains only a small number of species found across tropical Asia and Africa.

Question 4

Is Dopatrium junceum endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Dopatrium junceum is not endemic to Sri Lanka. It is distributed widely across tropical and subtropical Asia, including the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and parts of East Asia. In Sri Lanka it is native and naturally occurring, particularly in lowland wetland habitats.

Question 5

What does Dopatrium junceum look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a slender, erect annual herb growing typically between 10 and 40 cm tall. The stems are thin and rush-like, with small ovate leaves at the base and reduced bracts higher up. Small pink to lilac, two-lipped flowers appear along the upper portions of the stem during the flowering season.

Question 6

How is Dopatrium junceum harvested for Ayurvedic use?

Accepted Answer

The plant is not commercially cultivated and is gathered from wild populations in paddy fields and wetland margins. Traditional healers collect the aerial parts during the growing season. Sustainable wild harvesting is increasingly encouraged to protect local plant populations and preserve indigenous botanical knowledge.

Question 7

What other Sri Lankan medicinal plants are related to Dopatrium junceum in Ayurvedic practice?

Accepted Answer

Dopatrium junceum sits within a broader tradition of plant-based medicine that includes well-documented species such as Acacia chundra and Pongamia pinnata. Compound Ayurvedic preparations like Yogaraja Guggulu and Kaishore Guggulu draw on similar principles of combining multiple medicinal plants, each contributing distinct properties to the formulation.
