Question 1

What is Diospyros racemosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Diospyros racemosa is included in the official catalog of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained in Sri Lanka. Various plant parts, including the bark and roots, are attributed with astringent and anti-inflammatory properties in traditional ethnobotanical records. Scientific research into its specific pharmacological actions is still developing.

Question 2

Is Diospyros racemosa found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, the species occurs across parts of South and Southeast Asia, though it is among the native forest trees catalogued within Sri Lanka's medicinal plant heritage. It tends to grow in lowland humid tropical forests and is not confined to the island.

Question 3

Which plant family does Diospyros racemosa belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Ebenaceae family, which also includes the commercially important ebony trees and the persimmon fruit trees of the genus Diospyros. Sri Lanka's national tree, Diospyros ebenum (ebony), is a well-known relative.

Question 4

Where can I see medicinal plants like Diospyros racemosa in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy maintains a broad collection of native Sri Lankan trees, including members of the Diospyros genus. Guided walks in reserves such as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the Makandawa Rainforest may also reveal native forest trees in their natural habitat.

How is Diospyros racemosa different from the persimmon tree?

Accepted Answer

Both belong to the genus Diospyros, but the commercially cultivated persimmon (Diospyros kaki or Diospyros virginiana) is distinct in its large edible fruit and temperate growing requirements.
