Question 1

What family does Dimorphocalyx glabellus belong to?

Accepted Answer

Dimorphocalyx glabellus belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, a large family of flowering plants widespread across tropical Asia. The genus Dimorphocalyx is named for its distinctly dimorphic calyx structure, where sepals differ in form between male and female flowers.

Question 2

Is Dimorphocalyx glabellus used in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is catalogued as part of Sri Lanka's official register of ayurvedic medicinal plants under the reference code LK94006510. Traditional practitioners typically use such plants within compound formulations rather than as standalone remedies, consistent with the holistic approach of Sri Lankan ayurveda.

Question 3

Where is Dimorphocalyx glabellus found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is associated with Sri Lanka's humid tropical forests, particularly in wet zone and intermediate zone habitats where shaded, moist understory conditions prevail. It is unlikely to be encountered in the island's dry-zone scrublands or coastal areas.

Question 4

Is Dimorphocalyx glabellus endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is part of Sri Lanka's documented native flora, and given Sri Lanka's exceptionally high rate of plant endemism, it may well be found only on the island. However, precise distribution data across neighbouring regions requires further taxonomic research to confirm definitively.

Question 5

What is the significance of Sri Lanka's medicinal plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's government maintains a formal catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, providing standardised reference codes that allow practitioners, researchers, and regulators to identify and communicate about specific species. This system supports the continuity of traditional medicine practice and underpins quality control in ayurvedic production.

Question 6

Are there conservation concerns for plants like Dimorphocalyx glabellus?

Accepted Answer

Habitat loss through deforestation and agricultural encroachment is an ongoing indirect threat to forest-dwelling medicinal plants in Sri Lanka. Although Dimorphocalyx glabellus is not among the most heavily harvested species, the degradation of its likely forest habitats remains a concern for botanists and conservation practitioners.

Question 7

How can visitors learn about Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant tradition?

Accepted Answer

Travellers can engage with Sri Lanka's ayurvedic heritage through herb garden tours, visits to ayurvedic resorts and hospitals, and guided forest walks in areas such as the Kandy and Matale districts. Spice gardens in the hill country often include introductions to medicinal plant use that are accessible to general visitors.
