Question 1

What is Cochlospermum religiosum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurvedic practice, Cochlospermum religiosum is used to support liver health, manage jaundice, soothe inflamed mucous membranes, and address certain skin conditions. Its bark, root, gum, and flowers are all considered medicinally active. Scientific studies have identified flavonoids and tannins in the plant, though comprehensive clinical trials are still limited.

Question 2

What does Cochlospermum religiosum look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a medium-sized deciduous tree that sheds its leaves in the dry season and then produces large, bright yellow five-petalled flowers on its bare branches — typically between January and March in Sri Lanka. The fruits are inflated oval capsules containing seeds surrounded by silky fibres. The trunk has rough, fissured bark that exudes a resinous gum.

Question 3

Where can I find Cochlospermum religiosum in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree is most common in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climatic zones, particularly in the North Central and North Western provinces. It grows in open scrubland and dry forest edges, and has been documented in and around protected areas such as Wilpattu National Park. It is also found near ancient heritage sites in the Polonnaruwa region.

Question 4

Why is Cochlospermum religiosum called 'religiosum'?

Accepted Answer

The species epithet reflects the tree's long association with religious practice across South Asia. Its large golden flowers are commonly used as offerings at Buddhist and Hindu temples, and the tree is traditionally planted near sacred sites such as dagobas and kovils. This connection to religious spaces has been recognised formally in its scientific name.

Question 5

Is Cochlospermum religiosum native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the species is native to Sri Lanka as well as to the broader Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, it is an established part of the dry-zone flora and has been used in indigenous medicine for many centuries. It appears in official Sri Lankan Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia references.

Question 6

What gum or resin does this tree produce, and how is it used?

Accepted Answer

When the trunk is incised, Cochlospermum religiosum exudes a gum resin that has traditionally been used as a demulcent — a substance that soothes irritated or inflamed tissues — particularly in preparations targeting the digestive and respiratory systems. It also has mild astringent properties. The gum is distinct from other plant gums such as gum arabic, though it has sometimes been traded as a substitute.

Question 7

Can I see medicinal plants like this on a Sri Lanka wildlife tour?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many of Sri Lanka's dry-zone national parks and forest reserves support populations of Cochlospermum religiosum and other Ayurvedic plants. Wildlife itineraries focused on areas like Wilpattu, Udawalawe, or the North Central province naturally pass through habitats where these plants grow. Some specialist guides and Ayurveda-focused tours include plant identification as part of the experience.
