Question 1

What is Citrullus colocynthis used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Citrullus colocynthis is primarily used as a purgative herb in detoxification treatments. Its fruit pulp, root, and seeds appear in classical compound formulations targeting digestive disorders, joint pain, and certain inflammatory conditions. Because its active compounds are highly potent, it is used only in small, carefully processed doses under professional supervision.

Question 2

Is colocynth fruit safe to eat?

Accepted Answer

Raw colocynth fruit is not safe to consume. The flesh contains cucurbitacin glycosides that are toxic and can cause severe gastrointestinal distress, kidney irritation, and systemic effects even in small amounts. In Ayurvedic practice, the plant is subjected to processing techniques to reduce its harshness before any medicinal use, and it is always administered under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 3

Where does Citrullus colocynthis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in Sri Lanka's dry zone, particularly in open or disturbed land with sandy or loamy soils in the north, north-west, and south-east of the island. It is also cultivated at some Ayurvedic research stations and herb gardens associated with traditional medicine institutions.

Question 4

What does a colocynth plant look like?

Accepted Answer

Citrullus colocynthis is a trailing or climbing vine with deeply lobed, rough leaves and yellow flowers. Its fruit is a round gourd about the size of an orange with a smooth, hard rind that turns yellow when ripe. The interior flesh is white and intensely bitter, and the seeds are flat, oval, and pale brown.

Question 5

What active compounds are found in Citrullus colocynthis?

Accepted Answer

The main bioactive compounds include cucurbitacin glycosides — notably colocynthin — along with flavonoids, saponins, and fixed oils found in the seeds. These constituents are the subject of ongoing pharmacological research for potential anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial properties, though clinical evidence in humans is still developing.

Question 6

Is Citrullus colocynthis the same as bitter apple?

Accepted Answer

Yes, colocynth is commonly called bitter apple, bitter cucumber, or desert gourd in English. These names all refer to the same species, Citrullus colocynthis. The name 'bitter apple' refers specifically to the fruit's extremely bitter taste, which distinguishes it from all edible members of the Cucurbitaceae family.

Question 7

How is Citrullus colocynthis regulated in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, Citrullus colocynthis is listed as a medicinal plant within the regulatory framework of the Department of Ayurveda under the Ministry of Health. Commercial Ayurvedic products containing this herb must comply with national quality and safety standards, and its use in treatment is limited to registered Ayurvedic practitioners.
