Question 1

Where exactly is Aruwakkalu Archaeological Reserve?

Accepted Answer

Aruwakkalu is located on Sri Lanka's northwest coast, close to the Puttalam Lagoon and roughly between Puttalam town and the Kalpitiya Peninsula. It is approximately 160 km north of Colombo along the A3 coastal highway.

Question 2

What fossils have been found at Aruwakkalu?

Accepted Answer

Palaeontological research at Aruwakkalu has yielded fossil remains of ancient cetaceans and sirenians — prehistoric relatives of whales and dugongs — preserved in coastal sedimentary layers. These finds make the site significant not only archaeologically but also in terms of Sri Lanka's natural history.

Question 3

Is Aruwakkalu open to the public?

Accepted Answer

The reserve is accessible to visitors, though it lacks a formal visitor centre or developed infrastructure at this stage. Travellers are advised to arrange a knowledgeable local guide and to respect any restricted zones designated by the Department of Archaeology.

Question 4

How long does a visit to Aruwakkalu take?

Accepted Answer

Most visitors spend between two and four hours at the site itself. Many combine it with the Kalpitiya Peninsula or a return along the coast through Chilaw, making it a full-day excursion from Colombo or an easy addition to a northwest coast itinerary.

Question 5

What wildlife can I see around Aruwakkalu?

Accepted Answer

The adjacent Puttalam Lagoon wetlands support resident waterbirds and attract migratory waders and shorebirds between November and February. Offshore near Kalpitiya, spinner dolphins are commonly spotted from November through April.

Question 6

What period does the Aruwakkalu settlement date to?

Accepted Answer

Based on pottery and material evidence recovered from the site, Aruwakkalu is associated with Sri Lanka's early historical period, likely spanning the first millennium CE. Research suggests it functioned as part of the island's coastal trade networks, though full excavation is still ongoing.

Question 7

Do I need a permit to visit Aruwakkalu Archaeological Reserve?

Accepted Answer

Specific entry permit requirements should be confirmed with the Sri Lanka Department of Archaeology before your visit, as procedures for protected heritage sites can change. Your guide or a local DMC such as Lakpura can assist in arranging any necessary permissions.
