Question 1

What is Ardisia elliptica used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Ardisia elliptica has been used in preparations for skin disorders, inflammatory conditions, and rheumatic complaints. Leaves, bark, and roots have all been employed, typically in decoctions or topical preparations. Phytochemical studies have identified triterpenoids and saponins as potentially active compounds. Any medicinal use should be undertaken with guidance from a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Where can Ardisia elliptica be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The shrub grows in lowland wet and intermediate zones, typically in secondary forest, forest edges, and disturbed habitats. It is found in coastal areas, riverine margins, and village peripheries across the island. It is particularly associated with moist, partially shaded environments at low to mid elevations.

Question 3

What does the Ardisia elliptica plant look like?

Accepted Answer

It is an evergreen shrub growing one to three metres tall, with glossy, dark-green elliptic leaves that have wavy margins. Small pink to lavender flowers are followed by clusters of round drupes that ripen from red to black. The bead-like arrangement of fruits along branches is one of its most distinctive visual features.

Question 4

Is Ardisia elliptica the same as coral ardisia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Ardisia elliptica is one of the species commonly called coral ardisia or shoebutton ardisia, though these common names are also applied to the closely related Ardisia crenata. The two species share similar appearance and fruiting habits but differ in leaf margin form — Ardisia elliptica has smoother, wavy margins while Ardisia crenata has distinctly crenate (scalloped) edges.

Question 5

Is Ardisia elliptica an invasive plant?

Accepted Answer

Within its native range in tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka, Ardisia elliptica is a naturalized part of the local flora and is not considered invasive. However, in regions such as Hawaii and other Pacific islands where it was introduced, it has naturalized aggressively and is listed as an invasive species due to its ability to displace native understorey vegetation.

Question 6

What family does Ardisia elliptica belong to?

Accepted Answer

Ardisia elliptica belongs to the family Primulaceae under the current APG classification, though it was previously placed in Myrsinaceae before that family was merged. The genus Ardisia comprises several hundred species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Question 7

Are the fruits of Ardisia elliptica edible?

Accepted Answer

The small drupes of Ardisia elliptica are consumed by birds and wildlife, which aids in seed dispersal. Human consumption of the raw fruits is not well documented in culinary traditions, and the plant is primarily valued for its medicinal properties rather than as a food source. It is advisable not to consume any part of the plant without expert guidance.
