Question 1

What is Annona glabra called in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

Annona glabra is sometimes referred to locally by names tied to its appearance or wetland habitat, though it does not have a single universally standardised Sinhala common name in the way that more cultivated species do. It is related to the more familiar Annona species known in Sinhala as 'atha' (custard apple). Regional names may vary across districts.

Question 2

Is Annona glabra fruit edible?

Accepted Answer

The ripe fruit of Annona glabra is technically edible in small amounts, but it is not widely consumed as a food crop in Sri Lanka. The flesh is bland compared to related species like soursop or custard apple. The seeds, however, contain toxic alkaloids and should not be eaten.

Question 3

Where does Annona glabra grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Annona glabra is most commonly found in low-lying wetland environments, including riverbanks, lagoon margins, and swampy ground in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones. It favours waterlogged or seasonally flooded soils and is typical of coastal lowland habitats.

Question 4

What are the medicinal uses of Annona glabra in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, various parts of Annona glabra — including bark, leaves, and seeds — are attributed with properties such as astringency, antipyretic action, and antifungal activity. These uses are documented in traditional texts and ethnobotanical studies, though clinical research is ongoing. Always consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before use.

Question 5

Is Annona glabra the same as pond apple?

Accepted Answer

Yes, pond apple is one of the most common English names for Annona glabra, reflecting the tree's preference for wetland and waterside habitats. It is also sometimes called alligator apple, a name that originates from its natural range in Florida and the Caribbean where it grows alongside alligator habitat.

Question 6

Is Annona glabra an invasive species?

Accepted Answer

Annona glabra has been recorded as invasive in parts of Australia and some Pacific island ecosystems, where it colonises wetlands and can displace native vegetation. In Sri Lanka, within its natural or long-naturalized range, it is generally considered part of local wetland plant communities rather than a damaging invasive.

Question 7

What compounds make Annona glabra medicinally interesting to researchers?

Accepted Answer

Annona glabra contains acetogenins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. Acetogenins, a class of compounds found across the Annonaceae family, have attracted significant research interest due to their observed bioactivity in laboratory settings. Ongoing pharmacological studies continue to investigate these constituents.
