Question 1

What is Anisochilus carnosus used for in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In traditional South Asian and Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, Anisochilus carnosus is primarily used to ease respiratory complaints such as coughs and colds, and to support digestion by relieving bloating and flatulence. It is also applied externally for minor skin conditions and used in steam inhalation for headache relief. These are folk and traditional applications; clinical evidence in humans remains limited.

Question 2

Where does Anisochilus carnosus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found mainly in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climatic zones, growing on roadsides, disturbed ground, and scrubland margins in the lowland regions. It tolerates poor, well-drained soils and is especially common in the North Central and North Western provinces. Some households in rural areas cultivate it in home herb gardens.

Question 3

What family does Anisochilus carnosus belong to?

Accepted Answer

Anisochilus carnosus belongs to the Lamiaceae family, commonly known as the mint or deadnettle family. This places it in close botanical relation to other aromatic herbs such as basil, tulsi, and rosemary, which helps explain the plant's characteristic aromatic leaves and its traditional uses as a carminative and respiratory herb.

Question 4

Is Anisochilus carnosus safe to use?

Accepted Answer

The plant has a long history of traditional use without widespread reports of toxicity, but formal safety studies in humans are lacking. Anyone considering using it medicinally — particularly pregnant women, nursing mothers, or people on prescription medications — should consult a qualified ayurvedic physician or medical professional before doing so.

Question 5

What are the active compounds found in Anisochilus carnosus?

Accepted Answer

Preliminary phytochemical studies have identified rosmarinic acid, flavonoids, and various terpenoids in the plant's essential oil and leaf extracts. These compound classes are associated with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity in other plant species, though direct clinical evidence for Anisochilus carnosus specifically is still emerging.

Question 6

Can tourists buy Anisochilus carnosus in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Dried herb or powdered preparations can occasionally be found in ayurvedic pharmacies and traditional herb markets across Sri Lanka, though availability varies by region. Compound ayurvedic formulations that include the plant as one of several ingredients are more commonly stocked. Visitors to ayurvedic wellness centres may also encounter the plant in treatments or garden tours.

Question 7

How is Anisochilus carnosus identified in the wild?

Accepted Answer

The plant can be recognised by its succulent, woolly leaves that release a strong aroma when crushed, and by its dense cylindrical spikes of small pale lavender or whitish flowers. It typically grows to between 30 and 60 centimetres tall and favours open, sunny positions on dry or disturbed ground. Its resemblance to other mint-family herbs means confident identification is best done with local guidance.
